Great Black and White Photographers pt.2

I chose Dorothea Lange out of the three black and white photographers. I chose Lange because I really loved her photos and what they represented. Lange took photos of people and the specific photo I really liked, was a photo of a migrant women and her children. Lange took many photos of people during the times of immigration, showing the struggle people went through during this time. Also, the photo didn't use photoshop or other editing material. The picture is real and not filtered whatsoever.

     Her full name was Dorothea Nutzhorn, and later became Lange, due to Lange taking her mother's maiden name. She was born on May 26, 1895, in Hoboken, New Jersey. Lange died on October 11, 1965, in San Francisco, California. Lange attended Columbia University 1917 through 1918 for her education. Lange's parents were very big advocates of her education and encouraged her. Art and Literature were a big part of Lange's upbringing, and was exposed to the arts and creativity early on.

     Lange stayed at Columbia University for only a year. She then started to work as an apprentice to many photographers. One including Arnold Genthe, a leading portrait photographer. By 1918, Lange was living in San Francisco running a successful portrait studio. Lange began her travels with husband, Paul Taylor, documenting and reporting the migration she had witnessed. Lange photographed the people she met. Including the iconic "Migrant Mother" photo. In 1940, Lange received the Guggenheim Fellowship. Lange was hired by the Office of War Information to photograph the internment of Japanese Americans, and later, again by the same organization. With increasing health issues, Lange passed away in October due to Esophageal Cancer. Dorothea's work has influenced generations of photographers.

1. I really enjoyed the realism and detail of the images. They proved to show a large amount of depth. I especially like the soft glow the light seemed to have in each one.
This picture is my favorite of Nick's because it shows a strong message. When I view pictures I like to feel moved or conflicted in some way and his pictures do just that. In this image Nick uses avoiding mergers because the placement of the photo of the lions is in alignment with the background creating an illusion that the lions are in the picture along with the urbanized  surroundings.

5. There seems to be a little confusion surrounding Nick's lens and camera choice but many reports suggests he takes DOF portraits with his Pentax 67II. It's relevant inforamation because he takes pictures with a distinct fade and unique attention to detail

6. Nick explains in an interview, "I turned to photography in my mid-thirties, and launched into it with my Pentax 67 from the outset. Re inspiration, I have always been obsessed with black and white photography, especially the early work of Steichen."

7. Nick explains, "Photography was merely the best medium for me to express my feelings about animals, and the natural world."

Abandoned Theme Parks

I would want to visit Jazzland in New Orleans. I would like to go there to take pictures, and have fun. Also, it's a park that has color, and detail, not just rollercoasters, so that will help to make the pictures interesting especilly since they will be abandoned. I really enjoy abandoned places so it would be nice to experience that. Lastly, I just love that in an amusement park, there are so many different camera elements available.

I would love to film in Maruata Bay because it's simple and hippie-like all the way down to the amazing architecture. It's a fishing village with cliffs and wetlands and many opportunities to shoot amazing things.

To get there i would probably need hiking equiptment and and a backback to carry camera supplies. It's also safe to say i would need a guide to help me move around and expian the best places to hoot and what not to do and say.d

Mural Project

1. I think a nice theme would be people pictures of people laughing or smiling but genuinely doing so.

2. I think we should have cameras available.

3. We should put the murals on the lockers or by the entrance of every hall.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. I  wasn't what to photograph at first and the camera was very sensitive to movement, so staying steady was challenging.

2. I thought the most about focus referring to the issue i stated before trying to steady the camera for a clear shot.

3. I think my pictures were decent but i could improve on my picture of the moving branch.

4. i would do the picture of the eyes the same i like how they turned out.

5. I don't think i achieved any.

6. I would be interested seeing how now i've learned more about the topic.

Academic Post Shoot Reflection and Critique

 1. One of the challenges I encountered was with avoiding mergers. I found it difficult because we had little experience with it and it wasn't easy to spot it happening in an open environment.

2. I thought about focus the most. I thought of this because I like to take close up photos because in my opinion its the most pleasing to look at.

3. I would probably try to get better examples of avoiding mergers.

4. I would keep the balance and lines because they turned out really clear.

5. I think I will be able to achieve rule of thirds the easiest.

6. I think the hardest will probably be avoiding mergers.

7. I am still not entirely clear on avoiding mergers but i know i will be able to learn and prepare myself.
